Garfield Park · Indianapolis, IN
Roofing Contractor in Garfield Park, Indianapolis
Garfield Park has bungalows, duplexes and farmhouses that are a century old or more. R&R Roofing repairs and replaces roofs here, and puts the price in writing before any work starts.
The short answer: If your roof has years left and the damage is in one area, repair it. If shingles are failing across the roof or the same leaks keep returning, a replacement saves money over time. We tell you which one applies, with photos.
A neighborhood built around Indianapolis’s oldest park
Garfield Park sits south of Fountain Square, bounded roughly by Beecher Street, I-65, Troy Avenue and East Street/Madison Avenue. The park started as Southern Driving Park and was renamed Garfield Park in 1881. The Encyclopedia of Indianapolis calls it the city’s oldest park. A streetcar line reached it in 1895, and many of the neighborhood’s streets were laid out in the years that followed.
That history matters for your roof. A lot of the homes here were built in the early 1900s, and they are now well past the age when original framing, flashing and decking have been tested by more than a hundred Indiana winters.
What the homes here are like
The Encyclopedia of Indianapolis describes housing that ranges from an 1842 farmhouse to 20th-century bungalows and duplexes. Those older house types share a few roofing traits:
- Bungalows often have low-pitch roofs with wide overhangs and porch roofs that tie into the main roof. The valleys and the joint where the porch meets the house are common places for leaks.
- Duplexes can have long, shared roof planes and more than one chimney or vent stack, which means more flashing to keep watertight.
- Older houses may have several layers of shingles from past repairs, or plank decking instead of modern sheathing. We check this at the inspection so the estimate covers the real work.
Weather that wears out roofs here
Indianapolis averages about 25.5 inches of snow a year (NWS, 1991–2020), and the freeze-thaw cycle in winter is hard on any roof. Add summer hail and spring wind, and shingles lose granules, seals fail and flashing loosens. The signs to watch for are missing or curling shingles, granules in the gutters, stains on the ceiling, and daylight in the attic.

Garfield Park through the decades
The Encyclopedia of Indianapolis says Garfield Park grew to 125 acres between 1893 and 1918, and that the neighborhood’s peak population was 13,000 in 1962. The Madison Avenue Expressway opened in 1958 and I-65 in 1975, both of which cut off neighbors, and many residents moved to the suburbs in the 1970s and 1980s. A neighborhood master plan was created in 1989.
Today the area mixes long-time residents, young families and artists. A residency program with Big Car Collaborative had 10 homes by 2020.
Buying or renovating an older home here
Many people buy older Garfield Park houses to renovate. Before you close, have the roof inspected. A roof that looks fine from the street can hide soft decking, old leaks or several layers of shingles. We can inspect it and give you a written estimate, so you know the real cost before you commit.
- Ask whether the roof has been replaced, and when.
- Look for stains on ceilings and in the attic.
- Check the flashing around chimneys and where porch roofs meet the house.
- Get the estimate in writing before you decide on a repair or a full replacement.
