Broad Ripple, Indianapolis

Roofing Contractor in Broad Ripple, Indianapolis

Roof repair and replacement for Broad Ripple bungalows, porches and older homes.

The short answer: If your roof has years left and the damage is in one area, repair it. If shingles are failing across the roof or the same leaks keep returning, a replacement saves money over time. We tell you which one applies, with photos.

The short version

Broad Ripple’s homes were built over more than a century, and roofs here range from early-1900s bungalows to later infill. Common needs are leak repair, flashing, ventilation and replacement of worn shingles, often on homes with porches, dormers and additions.

Roofing in Broad Ripple usually means working on early-to-mid 20th century homes, many of them bungalows, near the White River and the Monon Trail. Typical jobs are leak repair, flashing around chimneys and porch tie-ins, ventilation fixes and shingle replacement. Get a written inspection and itemized quote before any major work.

About Broad Ripple

The Encyclopedia of Indianapolis reports that Jacob Coil platted Broad Ripple in April 1837, with the neighboring community of Wellington established a month later. The two joined and incorporated as Broad Ripple in 1884, and Indianapolis annexed it in 1922. The entry notes that many homes were built after 1900 in a variety of architectural styles, especially bungalows, as Indianapolis expanded northward. Broad Ripple Park, the Monon Trail and the IndyGo Red Line are among the area’s landmarks.

What the housing mix means for roofs

Bungalows often have low-pitched roofs, wide eaves and front porches with their own roofs. Additions and enclosed porches add tie-in points where roofing meets walls. Older homes may have layered roofs and limited attic ventilation. A thorough roof inspection checks all of these.

Common roof problems in Broad Ripple homes

  • Porch and low-slope roofs that pond water. See flat roof repair.
  • Flashing failures at chimneys, walls and additions. See chimney flashing repair.
  • Tree damage and debris from mature trees near the river corridor.
  • Poor ventilation causing heat and moisture problems. See roof ventilation.
  • Worn shingles on roofs near the end of their service life.

Repair or replace?

Repair suits a fairly young roof with limited damage. Replacement suits an old or repeatedly leaking roof. Read repair vs replacement and signs you need a new roof.

Winter and ice dams

Indianapolis averages about 25.5 inches of snow a year (NWS 1991 to 2020). Seal attic air leaks, insulate and balance ventilation. See ice dams in Indiana.

Storms and insurance

After hail or wind, document damage before temporary repairs and read your policy. See the hail damage claim guide and storm chaser scams.

Permits, licensing and contracts

Indiana has no statewide roofing license. Indianapolis licenses roofing contractors through DBNS. Confirm permit requirements before work starts. The Indiana Home Improvement Contracts Act requires a written contract for residential work over $150.

What to expect from us

Broad Ripple’s history, and what it means for roofs

Broad Ripple began as two towns. Jacob Coil platted Broad Ripple north of the Central Canal in April 1837, and James and Adam Nelson founded Wellington on the south bank a month later. The communities incorporated together in 1884 with about 150 residents. Indianapolis annexed Broad Ripple in 1922, which let residents build higher river levees and modernize the fire department.

From about 1890 to 1930 Broad Ripple was a summer retreat, with interurban lines carrying city residents to the river. White City, an amusement park, opened in 1906 and later became Broad Ripple Park. Residential growth followed as Indianapolis expanded north, and the Encyclopedia of Indianapolis notes that many homes were built after 1900, especially bungalows.

Why the White River corridor matters

Homes near the river and canal often sit under mature trees. Leaves and limbs collect in valleys and gutters, hold moisture against shingles and accelerate wear. Regular gutter cleaning and a spring and fall roof check are inexpensive ways to avoid larger repairs. See roof maintenance.

Bungalows and their roofs

Bungalows are the signature house of Broad Ripple. They usually have low to moderate pitches, wide overhanging eaves and a front porch with its own roof. Typical roofing issues include:

  • Water pooling on low-slope porch roofs
  • Flashing failure where a porch roof meets the main wall
  • Wide eaves that catch wind and, in winter, collect ice
  • Original decking that has absorbed moisture over many years
  • Dormers added later that were never properly flashed

A village with commercial roofs too

The Broad Ripple Village Association formed in 1969 to revitalize the area, and the Broad Ripple Avenue district later became known for shops, restaurants and music venues. Commercial and mixed-use buildings often have flat or low-slope roofs. We focus on residential roofing, but our flat roof repair guide explains the common causes of low-slope leaks, which apply to porch and addition roofs on homes as well.

What a good Broad Ripple roof inspection covers

  • Porch and addition tie-ins
  • Chimney and wall flashing
  • Valleys and gutters under tree canopy
  • Attic ventilation and signs of moisture
  • Condition and age of shingles and decking

See roof inspection.

Winter performance

With about 25.5 inches of snow a year on average (NWS 1991 to 2020), wide eaves and older attics are prone to ice dams. Read ice dams in Indiana for what to do and what to avoid.

Storms and insurance

After hail or wind, photograph damage from the ground, avoid permanent repairs until your insurer has inspected, and keep receipts. Read our hail damage claim guide and actual cash value vs replacement cost. Be cautious of door-to-door offers: storm chaser scams in Indiana.

  2. Will you replace damaged decking and how is it priced?
  3. What ventilation changes do you recommend?
  4. Is the permit in the contract?
  5. What does the written warranty cover?
