Homeowner guide
Do Roofers Need a License in Indiana?
Indiana does not issue a statewide roofing license, which surprises many homeowners. Local rules still apply. Here is how to check a roofer before you hire.
The short answer: No statewide roofing license exists in Indiana. The City of Indianapolis licenses contractors through its Department of Business and Neighborhood Services (DBNS), and suburbs set their own rules. Always ask for the license number, proof of insurance and a written contract.
The short version
Because there is no state roofing license, “licensed” can mean different things in different towns. Some places license or register contractors, and some rely on permits and inspections. That is why checking locally matters.
Rules change. Confirm current requirements with DBNS for Indianapolis addresses or with the local building department for suburbs before you hire.
What Indianapolis requires
The City of Indianapolis licenses roofing contractors through DBNS. Ask any roofer working in Indianapolis for their license number and verify it with DBNS rather than relying on a card or a website badge.
Some towns inside Marion County have their own offices, so confirm which jurisdiction your address falls under.
Suburbs have their own rules
Carmel, Fishers, Noblesville, Westfield, Zionsville, Brownsburg, Avon, Plainfield, Greenwood and others each set their own contractor and permit requirements. Call the local building department and ask what they require. Our location pages cover service in Carmel, Fishers, Noblesville and the wider service area.
What else to check besides a license
- Proof of insurance. General liability and workers’ compensation, with a certificate sent by the insurer.
- A written contract. Indiana’s Home Improvement Contracts Act requires a written contract for residential work over $150.
- Permits. Ask who pulls the permit if one is required. See roof permits in Indianapolis.
- References and work history. Ask for recent local jobs.
- Warranty terms in writing. See roof warranties explained.
Why an unlicensed roofer can cost you
If a contractor is not properly licensed or insured where required, you may have less recourse if something goes wrong. An uninsured worker injured on your property can create liability questions, and unpermitted work can cause trouble with inspections, insurers or a future sale. This is general information, not legal advice.
Sources and where to confirm
This guide draws on the Indiana Home Improvement Contracts Act and on licensing practices published by the City of Indianapolis Department of Business and Neighborhood Services. Requirements change, so confirm with DBNS or your local building department. It is general information, not legal advice.
