Roof Cost Per Square in Indianapolis: How Roofers Price a Job
Roofers often talk about price per square. This guide explains what a square is, what changes the price and what to look for in an estimate, without quoting numbers that go out of date.
The short answer: A roofing square is 100 square feet of roof surface. Roofers measure your roof in squares and price the job from materials, labor, roof complexity, tear-off, decking repairs and disposal. The only price that counts for your home is a written estimate after an inspection.
The short version
A square is a unit of roof area equal to 100 square feet. A roof of 30 squares covers about 3,000 square feet of roof surface. That is the roof area, not the floor area of the house, because slope and overhangs add to it.
We do not publish a price per square here because prices change with materials, labor and the job. For the factors and a framework, see roof replacement cost in Indianapolis.
What drives the price per square
- Material. Asphalt shingles, metal and other materials differ widely. See metal vs asphalt roofing.
- Pitch and height. Steeper and taller roofs take more time and safety gear.
- Complexity. Valleys, dormers, chimneys and skylights add labor and flashing.
- Tear-off. Removing old layers costs more than a layover, and some codes limit layers.
- Decking repairs. Rotted boards found during tear-off are usually priced separately.
- Underlayment and ventilation. Better systems add cost and protection.
- Disposal and access. Where the dumpster goes and how the crew reaches the roof.
- Timing. Busy periods after storms can affect scheduling and availability.
How roofers measure your roof
A contractor can measure from the ground, from the roof or from aerial imagery. The number of squares usually includes extra for waste, such as cut shingles at edges and valleys. Ask how waste is counted so you can compare bids fairly.
Reading an estimate
A useful estimate lists the squares, the materials by brand and line, the underlayment, flashing and ventilation, what is included in tear-off and cleanup, how decking repairs are priced and what the warranty covers. If a bid only gives a lump sum, ask for the breakdown.

Why the lowest price per square may not be the best deal
A low price per square can hide thinner underlayment, reused flashing or an unpriced decking allowance. Compare the scope, not the headline number. See how to compare roofing companies in Indianapolis.
Insurance and cost
If your roof was damaged by a covered event, your insurer sets the payout based on your policy. Read about actual cash value vs replacement cost and the insurance claim process.
Roof pricing questions
What is a roofing square?
A roofing square is 100 square feet of roof surface.
How many squares is my roof?
It depends on its area, pitch and complexity. A roofer can measure it during an inspection or estimate.
Why are quotes so different?
Scope, materials, tear-off method, decking allowances and warranty can all differ. Compare written bids line by line.
Does a steeper roof cost more?
Often yes, because it needs more time and safety equipment.
Is decking repair included in the price?
Often it is priced separately, because it is only found after tear-off. Ask how it will be priced before you sign.
