Spring Roof Checklist: Check for Winter and Storm Damage
Winter can leave damage you will not notice until the first heavy spring rain. A quick check now catches problems before storm season.
The short answer: After winter, look for shingle damage, signs of ice dam leaks, loose flashing and gutters, and attic moisture. Check again after spring storms for wind and hail damage. Do your checking from the ground and the attic, and call a roofer for anything on the roof.
The short version
Winter brings snow load, ice dams and freeze-thaw cycles. Spring brings wind, heavy rain and hail. A spring check looks for both.
Safety first: check from the ground and the attic. Do not climb onto a roof that may be wet, slick or damaged.
Winter damage to look for
- Water stains on ceilings or walls, especially near exterior walls and eaves
- Damp or stained insulation and roof deck in the attic
- Loose or damaged gutters pulled by ice and snow
- Cracked, lifted or missing shingles
- Damaged flashing, vents or chimney caps
See ice dams in Indiana and roof leaks in winter.
Storm and hail season
Spring storms can damage a roof quickly. After a storm, look for shingles in the yard, dents in metal vents, gutters or downspouts and granule loss in the gutters. See signs of wind damage and the hail damage claim guide.
Gutters, trees and drainage
- Clear debris and check that downspouts drain away from the foundation
- Look for branches that rub the roof or could fall in a storm
- Check that gutters are securely attached
Moss and algae often show up in damp springs. See moss and algae on roof shingles.
When to call a roofer
Call after storms, when you see stains, or when the roof is near the end of its life. A roof inspection documents the roof’s condition, which also helps with any later insurance claim. If you find damage, see storm damage roof repair and roof repair.
Spring roof questions
When should I check my roof in spring?
Once snow and ice are gone and the weather is safe, and again after major storms.
What should I look for after winter?
Water stains, damp attic wood, loose gutters, lifted or missing shingles and damaged flashing.
Should I wait until I see a leak?
No. Small damage is easier and cheaper to fix before it leaks.
How do I document storm damage?
Take dated photos from the ground and keep any paperwork. A written inspection helps with insurance claims.
Can I clean moss off my roof myself?
Be careful. Pressure washing can damage shingles, and roofs are dangerous to walk on. Ask a roofer about safe methods.
