Fall Roof Checklist: Get Your Indiana Roof Ready for Winter
Fall is the best time to find small roof problems before freeze-thaw cycles, snow and ice make them worse. This checklist covers what you can look at yourself and what to leave to a roofer.
The short answer: Clear gutters, look over the roof from the ground for missing or lifted shingles, check flashing and vents, inspect the attic for dampness, and fix small problems before winter. Do not climb on the roof yourself. A professional inspection is the safest way to check it.
The short version
Water that gets into small gaps in fall can freeze and expand in winter, which widens the gap. Fixing a lifted shingle or cracked vent boot now is usually cheaper than repairing leaks and interior damage in January.
Safety first: do the checks below from the ground, a stable ladder at the eave or the attic. Do not walk on the roof.
From the ground
- Missing, cracked, curled or lifted shingles
- Exposed or sticking-up nails
- Damaged or missing ridge caps
- Sagging gutters or gutters pulling away from the fascia
- Moss, algae or debris buildup. See moss and algae on roof shingles
- Branches touching or hanging over the roof
Gutters and drainage
Clear leaves and debris from gutters and downspouts so water can flow away from the house. Clogged gutters can contribute to ice dams and water backing up under shingles. See ice dams in Indiana.
Flashing, vents and skylights
Flashing is the metal that seals joints around chimneys, vents, walls and skylights. Check for gaps, rust or lifted edges, and look at the rubber boots around plumbing vents for cracks. Problems here are a common leak source. See chimney flashing repair and skylight leak repair.
In the attic
- Look for damp or stained wood, darkened insulation or daylight coming through
- Check that insulation is even and not blocking vents at the eaves
- Look for frost or moisture on nails in cold weather, which can point to ventilation problems
- Make sure bathroom fans vent outside, not into the attic
See attic ventilation in Indiana and roof ventilation and ice dams.
When to call a roofer
Call if you find damage, if the roof is near the end of its life, or if you want a clear picture before winter. A roof inspection or a maintenance visit covers the items above and gives you a written report. If a leak has already started, see roof leak repair.
Fall roof questions
When should I inspect my roof in the fall?
Early to mid fall is a good time, after leaves have dropped and before freezing weather.
Can I check my roof myself?
You can check from the ground and in the attic. Leave on-roof inspection to a professional.
Should I clean my gutters in fall?
Yes. Clear gutters help water drain and can reduce ice dam risk.
Is it too late to fix the roof once it snows?
Repairs are still possible in winter, but cold and wet conditions make them harder. Fixing problems in fall is easier.
How often should a roof be inspected?
Many homeowners check it every year and after major storms. A roofer can recommend a schedule based on your roof.
