How to Prepare Your Home for a Roof Replacement

A roof replacement is loud, dusty and busy. A little preparation protects your belongings and helps the crew work safely and quickly.

The short answer: Clear the driveway and the areas around the house, take things off attic and upper-floor walls that could shake loose, secure pets, tell your neighbors and agree with your roofer on access, cleanup and who to call. Ask for the start window in writing.

The short version

Most preparation takes an hour or two. The goal is to protect your belongings, give the crew room to work and avoid surprises. Your contractor should tell you what they need, but this checklist covers the usual items.

Outside the house

  • Move cars out of the driveway and garage-side areas where materials and a dumpster will go
  • Clear patio furniture, grills, planters and decorations near the house
  • Trim back low branches that block access, if you agreed to this
  • Mark sprinkler heads, outdoor lights and fragile items for the crew
  • Keep children and pets away from the work zone

Ask where the dumpster and materials will be placed so you can protect the lawn and driveway.

Inside the house

  • Take pictures, mirrors and shelves off upper-floor walls, because vibration can shake things loose
  • Cover or move items stored in the attic. Dust and debris can fall through gaps
  • Protect furniture under attic access points
  • Tell anyone who works from home or sleeps during the day that noise will be constant
  • Check that pets are in a quiet area or away from the house

Talk to your roofer

  1. Confirm the start window and what happens if weather delays the job.
  2. Ask how the crew will protect landscaping, siding and gutters.
  3. Agree on where materials and the dumpster go.
  4. Ask how decking repairs are priced if rot is found. See roofing estimates explained.
  5. Ask about the magnet sweep and final cleanup.
  6. Confirm the contact person for the job.

Neighbors, HOA and permits

Let neighbors know about noise and trucks. If your neighborhood has a homeowners association, check whether materials or colors need approval. See roof permits in Indianapolis for how permits and HOAs differ.

After the job

  • Walk the property with the crew lead
  • Check the yard and driveway for nails and debris
  • Keep your contract, photos and warranty paperwork together
  • Schedule a check-up after the first big storm if you have any concerns

Roof replacement preparation questions

Do I need to move things out of the attic?

You do not have to empty it, but cover or move items under the roof. Dust and debris can fall through gaps during tear-off.

Should I take things off the walls?

Yes, on upper floors and near the attic. Vibration from work above can shake pictures and shelves loose.

What about my pets?

The noise can be stressful. Keep them in a quiet area or away from the house during work.

Should I tell my neighbors?

It is a courtesy that avoids surprises. Let them know about noise, trucks and the expected dates.

Who handles the permit?

Usually the contractor, but confirm it in your contract and ask for the permit number if one is required.
